Christopher Sperandio’s works map the numerous margins between mass and museum cultures, taking a variety of forms, including comics and books, games, temporary sculptures, painted installations, television, billboards, and digital media, all usually featuring a public involvement component, in the form of open calls, canvassing, or workshops. Since 2015, these works have focused almost exclusively on opposing fascism in its many forms.

Beginning in May 2020, Sperandio has maintained a daily drawing practice on Instagram as @pinko_joe. These single-panel drawings are anti-fascist, anti-racist, and pro-democracy, and this account has grown to over 20,000 followers. In June 2023, this Instagram account was selected by the editors of PRINT Magazine for a PRINT Award in the category of Citizen Design, recognizing the work and critical thinking brought by Sperandio to issues of social justice, community intervention, sustainability, and human rights across issues and borders.

Sperandio’s works have been the subject of museum exhibitions and art centers in the United States, Germany, Northern Ireland, Denmark, England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, and France. Commissioning institutions include MoMA/PS1, the Public Art Fund, Creative Time, London’s Institute of Contemporary Art, Project Row Houses, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Wired Magazine, and DC Comics. Kuš!, Fantagraphics Books, Argle Bargle Books and DC Comics have published his works. At Rice University, he’s an Associate Professor of Art.
